Today’s post is an introduction to the minimalism series I am starting. Each post/video will help aid in different areas of your life, but before I start posting them, I thought I would tell you guys about what minimalism means to me, as it can mean something different to everyone.
WHAT IS MINIMALISM?
Minimalism is very subjective - one minimalist’s life can look very different from another minimalist’s life and that’s okay! Minimalism is what you want it to be so if you think that minimalism is just about the amount of stuff you have then that’s what minimalism is to you.
Other people extend minimalism to their friendships or what they eat or what clothes they wear and that is what minimalism means to them.
So minimalism is basically whatever you want it to be, which is why I’ve decided to create this series in this particular way. You don’t have to watch the videos/read the posts in any particular order or watch all the videos/read the posts if you don’t want. It’s not like a book or movie that you need to watch/read from beginning to end.
If you just want minimalist advice on for example your capsule wardrobe, then just watch that video/read that post. That’s it!
BEFORE YOU START WATCHING/READING MY MINIMALIST SERIES
I’d like to give you 4 pointers:
Critically analyze your priorities in life - what are you doing with your time? What do you want to do with your time? What are your aspirations? What makes you happy? Do your surroundings aid or deter your motivations in life? What matters to you? Spend some time analyzing and studying these questions and come up with your answer. This will become the foundation for what you choose to keep and get rid of, and what you choose to spend your time on.
Get inspired - go on Pinterest for example, and identify what you like and don’t like. Awhile back, I posted my Extreme Bedroom Makeover video, but before I did any of that, I decided what I wanted for my room. I did a lot of research, going on Pinterest, watched YouTube videos, I visited various blogs and just got inspired. I can now describe my taste as clean, modern and minimal with shabby chic and rustic french country accents. With that aesthetic in mind is how I created my bedroom.
Quality over Quantity - this can be applied to every aspect of your life if you want it to. It’s tough because as a society, we’re so used to consumption and the mentality that more is better. It can be hard to let go of things and be okay with less, but in my opinion, it just makes your life so much better when you have less but have a higher quality of what you do have. I think it’s important to note that minimalism is not about deprivation or lacking something… it’s more about having the perfect amount of something. I believe society has taught us to want more than we need and our lives are in excess and wasteful because of it. When you simplify your life and analyze your priorities, and only have the stuff that you need, you will find that you have a much better quality of life because your not distracted with all this extra stuff and it doesn’t necessarily mean physical stuff - it can be mental stuff as well like unnecessary stresses that you can easily get rid of if you put your mind towards it and focus on things that are important to you.
Don’t be afraid of change - as life goes on, I change. Because of that my priorities change as well and that’s a good thing. In fact, I think it’s really important for people to expect change and when change does come, welcome it. Our lives are not meant to be stagnant, they’re always evolving. When people adopt a minimalist lifestyle, change becomes so much easier.
I try to apply minimalism to virtually every aspect of my life and that includes things like my relationships, time, etc. What I want to take from minimalism is that I want to simplify my life in every aspect so I can enjoy the things that I love most. So basically, I use minimalism as an aid to make my life the best it can be.
I really hope you enjoy this minimalist series!
